Solving Pesky Ink Smudges on Your Prints

If you take care of your printer and put in good, fresh supplies, it can be frustrating when you find ink cartridges into your machine and print off the first page – and see smudges. This is one issue with printers – streaks, smudges and black marks on prints – that can be annoying and ruin your documents. The problem you should not ignore is when you get many smudges in the same spot.

If you notice that you are getting multiple smudges from your ink and in the same spot, you should see if there is any debris inside the printer. Check and make sure you clean the paper path, using a soft clean cloth and look for ink and small parts of paper. Print off 10 blank sheets without any text on them to see if that helps to clear up any of the dirt that might be in your machine.

You can also get ink smudges on your paper because of a problem in one part of the printer called the transfer unit. If you are getting smudges on your prints after cleaning the paper route, you should look inside the machine at the printer’s transfer unit. Be careful and follow the manufacturer’s directions exactly – doing things like making contact with the transfer belt or operating on the machine while it is plugged in can be extremely dangerous. Read all of the direction for handling the transfer unit before you start.

Finally, if you find many smudges in the same spot, make sure your printer paper is up to the specifications of the machine. This is such an easy thing to check, and it’s something that can make a big difference. Make sure you have the paper in the correct trays, that the paper is the right kind and that the machine is calibrated.
